Are you ready? On this guided tour of Óbidos you will fall in love with the wonderful and most renowned Portuguese Medieval Village.
A journey through time where you will discover all its charm, through the history of its monuments, walls and its most typical flavours such as ginjinha.
We will start the tour at the indicated time at Porta da Vila, the gate that gives us access to the Old Town, where we will get lost in its streets with Arab and medieval influences and understand the Christian conquest of the city.
We will walk along Rua Josefina to stop at the monument to Luis de Camões and some of the shops converted into bookshops where we will understand why Óbidos is internationally recognised as a Literary Village par excellence.
We will visit the Chocolate House to learn about the history of one of the city’s most famous festivals and to understand the Christian influence on the town.
We will arrive at St. Peter’s Square to discover the connection of this city with Leiria, Nazaré and Peniche and we will see the chapel of St. Martin, the church of St. Peter and the Town Hall, unmissable and best preserved examples of the medieval gothic architecture of the time.
We will then pass by the Arco da Cadeia, a municipal museum that was originally the town’s prison, to reach Santa Maria Square, where we will admire the Church of Santa Maria, the old Santa Casa da Misericordia, the famous Pelourinho and the town’s Chafariz. Here we will tell the tragic story of the 1531 earthquake.
We will continue on to Santiago Square where we will learn about the history of the church that bears his name (today transformed into a library) and we will enter the courtyard of the Castle of Óbidos, today converted into an inn (the first of its kind in Portugal).
The Castle of Óbidos is among the 7 wonders of Portugal and is considered one of the most important heritages of Portuguese architecture! On our tour of the walls we will understand the history of their construction, the aqueduct and the town’s Medieval Festival, as well as the tragic and romantic death of a young man for love at the Gate of Nuestra Señora de Gracia.
Finally, we will walk along the famous Rua Direita (street on the right) where you will discover charming handicraft shops, the famous organic market of the city, and you will have the possibility to experience tasting the ginjinha, the rich original liquor of Óbidos.
The guide will say goodbye, after 2h – 2h15′ at the Municipal Museum, where he will answer any questions and give you any extra information you may need about the town.
