Origin of the Alfama district
The origins of the Alfama district are lost in the past. There are traces of Roman, Visigothic, Arab and medieval constructions. Different cultures have left their mark on this exceptionally cosmopolitan area.
In the end, it was the Arabs who gave it the name that has survived to this day. They decided to call it al-hamma or alfamm. The translation is related to the baths or fountains that abounded in the area.
What to see in the Alfama district?
One could lose oneself in the streets of the Alfama district for days.Among the many activities that can be enjoyed are; entering into the its shops, enjoy the local dishes or have a drink in one of its bohemian bars, with Fado music playing in the background.
Another attraction of this neighbourhood is the tramway.. There is a power line that runs through the narrow streets and takes you to the highest point. There you will find the Castillo de San Jorge, a fortress in a perfect state of preservation and with breathtaking views. There are also other points of interest, such as Santa Maria Maior de Lisboa or Sé de Lisboa, which is the city’s cathedral and the oldest church of all.
You can’t miss the viewpoints you’ll find as you walk down the streets. One of the best is Portas do Sol, a large terrace with tables and bars where you can enjoy a soft drink or sangria, for example.
Also noteworthy is is the small viewpoint of Santa Lucía, which has very interesting views and is a charming place. It is largely tiled and, with a bit of luck, there will be a musician playing fado.. If you visit at the right time, you will see some cruise ships anchored at the mouth of the Tagus.
